The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, which is commonly known as the Right to Education Act, provides for free and compulsory education to all children in India between the ages of 6 and 14, regardless of their gender, caste, or socio-economic background.

This Act not only guarantees the right to education for all children but also lays down the norms and standards for the quality of education that should be provided.

The Act recognizes the special needs of girls and children from disadvantaged and marginalized communities and provides for their inclusion and participation in the education system.

The Act also prohibits discrimination against any child in the admission process and ensures that children are not subjected to physical or mental harassment in schools.

It is the duty of the State to ensure that every child in the country receives education up to the elementary level, which is up to class VIII.
