The Right to Information Act, 2005 is a legislation passed by the Parliament of India

The Right to Information Act, 2005 is a legislation passed by the Parliament of India that provides citizens of India the right to seek information from any public authority. The Act empowers citizens to request and receive information related to the functioning of government bodies, their decisions, actions, and policies.

Under the Act, any citizen of India can make a request for information by submitting an application to the concerned Public Information Officer (PIO). The application must include details such as the name and address of the applicant, the information requested, and the mode of access (i.e., whether the information is to be provided in electronic form or as a hard copy).

The Act applies to all public authorities, including government departments, offices, and institutions at the central, state, and local levels. It also applies to private bodies that receive substantial funding from the government, perform public functions, or provide services that are of public interest.

The Act mandates that the public authorities must respond to the request within 30 days. If the information is not provided within the stipulated time or if the information provided is found to be false or misleading, the applicant has the right to file an appeal or complaint to the higher authorities.

The Right to Information Act, 2005 has played a significant role in promoting transparency and accountability in the functioning of public authorities in India. The Act has empowered citizens to access information that was previously inaccessible, which has led to increased scrutiny of the government's actions and policies.
